My Room

From the moment you first step into my room;  your feet are met with a cooling sensation, wood. Your eyes are hit with a deep, bright light where two-toned pink strips cover the walls, but not in the way you would expect. The strip, furthest left, is dark pink and the one that follows is a softer version. The stripes are not thin, but about three-fourths of a foot long.

Your eyes dart quickly to the white framed door, with black borders across the room. It is nothing special– protecting this door are baby pink sheer curtains, gripped tightly by plaited white curtains, two times its size. As you approach the door, you see a beautiful view of the neighborhood, mountains, and numerous hills creating a breathtaking scene. Suddenly, your eyes dart to the walls again. This time you notice the dozens of photos pinned up against a singular wall.

Below these photos, is a raggedy white vanity filled with pictures of important religious figures her grandma once put up. You would never expect a single vanity could hold such great memories. On top of that vanity, are several trophies that reflect one of the things highly valued in her life, tennis–or at least when tennis was her only pride and joy, her only significance, her only worry. The trophies overshadow the several medals gifted to her by her academic excellence, or what will always be her second choice: Track and field. When you blink, you shift over to the wall on the right side.

Her once-polished bunk bed has started to disintegrate. An odd mix of bedsheets covers her bed. A brown cover, with hints of burgundy, creates an extreme pattern filled with shapes, flowers, and abstract elements.  While her sister’s bed is covered in one that matches the aesthetic of the room in which one side is pink and the other a bright orange. You get a glimpse of the closet, stunned that it is not just an ordinary mirror. As you turn to the left, several white drawers fill her room.

Finally, as you prepare to leave the room, one thing grabs your attention. Piles of accessories, clothes, and shoes are untouched. What once was a room that held the most meaningful memories, became a room filled with grief. Her grandmother’s belongings stayed untouched and lay bold. Her last drinks, her medicine, her clothes, everything.
